In-Form Stearns Hoping to Make Merry

It’s been a season to remember for Stearns. Less than nine months ago, Stearns wasn’t even in the top 500 of the WTA Rankings. Some solid performances in the second half of the 2022 season meant she was able to finish off the season ranked 2019th in the world.

Picking up from where she had left off last year, Stearns has continued to make merry in 2023 as well.

She has featured in four ITF circuit competitions this year and won two of them – one on outdoor and the other on indoor hardcourt surfaces. She was also a finalist at a third one on clay.

And then featuring in her first WTA match of the season at the Austin Open, Stearns went on to defeat Katie Boulter and Mirjam Bjorklund in successive encounters to reach the quarterfinal.

Playing a qualifier first up, she could well be looking at her maiden WTA 1000 victory.

Masarova Solid in 2023 Too

Much like her opponent, Masarova has been no worse in 2023. Having dropped to 199th in the world late last year, she has improved to 92nd at the moment, just two spots behind her career-best.

And that has been thanks to Masarova’s performance at the Auckland Open early this season.

Starting out as a qualifier in the tournament, she defeated Sloane Stephens, Anna Blinkova and Karolina Muchova on her way to the final where she lost to the rampaging Cori Gauff.

While Masarova failed to qualify for the Australian Open, she managed to do that for each of the three tournaments that followed after starting out in the qualifiers. At Linz, she went a step further by winning a round as well.

Masarova has already overcome Mirjam Bjorklund and Liv Hovde in the qualifiers to make it to the main draw for the fourth successive time but can she now take that step further?

Stearns v Masarova Prediction and Tip

Stearns, at 11/8 to win this match, and given her solid recent form, looks like a tempting option to go with. We could see three sets in the match.
