Alexei Popyrin v Zhang Zhizhen Head to Head

Popyrin and Zhang have clashed twice before this. The Aussie has won both meetings including a qualifying round in Adelaide earlier this season.

Popyrin Enters the Draw as Lucky Loser

Alexei Popyrin lost to Taro Daniel in three sets on Tuesday but enters the Indian Wells draw as a lucky loser replacing the injured Michael Mmoh.

Popyrin had a really tough qualifying round against Daniel, but he pushed the Japanese to three sets. Ultimately his serve let him down in key moments in the match, serving six double faults and getting broken three times in the deciding third set.

The 23-year-old is seeking an improved year, and shortly rejoined the world’s top 100 last month after reaching a quarterfinal at the ATP tournament in Adelaide and the last eight of the Manama Challenger.

He is 9-7 for the season and has reached the second round of the Indian Wells Masters twice in his career.

Zhang Wins All-Chinese Affair to Qualify

Zhang Zhizhen defeated compatriot Shang Juncheng 6-7 6-3 7-6 in a three-hour marathon to reach the main draw of the 2023 BNP Paribas Open.

Although he hasn’t won a main draw match at Tour level this season, he savored the moment as he fought back from losing the first set breaker to win in three. He spurned four set points in the first set, losing it 10-12.

But he regrouped in the second set to restore parity. In the decider, the 26-year-old and his teenage countryman were neck and neck, with the set eventually going into a tiebreak. Zhang converted his fifth match point to secure the win.

Last October Zhang became a household name back home after becoming the first Chinese man to break inside the ATP’s top 100 with his run to the Napoli Cup quarterfinal.

Popyrin v Zhang Prediction and Tip

Popyrin comes in as the lucky loser, but he is a clear favorite here. Expect the Aussie to serve his way into the second round.
