Camila Giorgi v Arantxa Rus Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between these two players. Two of them came on the ITF circuit which Rus won. Giorgi came back with a victory at the Tenerife Open in 2021.

Giorgi Trying to Claw Back to Her Best

It’s been a good start to the season for Giorgi who had fallen to world number 73 at point this year. She has recovered rather nicely thanks to her Merida Open title win and will enter this tournament ranked 46th in the world.

Giorgi overcame the likes of Nuria Parrizas Diaz, Sloane Stephens and Katerina Siniakova on her way to the final of the Merida Open. She was taken to three sets but came through against Rebecca Peterson in the end.

Interestingly, Giorgi was unable to continue with that same form in the following week when she took to court for the Monterrey Open. In the very first round, the Italian player went down to Elena Gabriela Ruse.

The world number 46 comes into this year’s Indian Wells Open having played here just once over the last six seasons. Can she make it to the second round?

Rus Surprise Entrant Through the Qualifiers

Having gone down to 130th in the world, Rus needed to come through two qualifying rounds to make it to the main draw here. More vitally for her, she wasn’t the favourite in either of those two rounds but still found her footing and came through.

In the first qualifier, the Arcadia ITF competition runner-up from the previous week edged out Diane Shnaider in three sets. She then overcame Sara Errani in the second qualifying round after having withdrawn from the match against the same opponent in Arcadia.

Rus hasn’t won a main draw match all season. In fact her last win in the first round of a WTA tournament came in Parma in September last season.

With those kind of struggles under her belt, and playing an opponent who has been in decent form, Rus has her work cut out here.

Giorgi v Rus Prediction and Tip

Giorgi should not have a lot of difficulties coming through here but we could see a bit of a fight from Rus which takes one of the sets into a tie-breaker.
