Yoshihito Nishioka v Cristian Garin Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came in the qualifiers of the Sydney International of 2019. Nishioka had won that match in straight sets.

Nishioka Slips to Two Defeats in Three Matches

While Nishioka had begun the season in the manner he had left off last year, full of surprise wins and deep runs in tournaments, his more recent showings have left a bit of a question-mark. Is the recent fairy-tale ending for Nishioka or is it a case of a minor blip in the long run?

Nishioka, who kick-started the year with a semifinal appearance at the Adelaide International, then registered his best ever performance in a Grand Slam at the Australian Open that followed.

The world number 34 overcame Mikael Ymer and Mackenzie McDonald to make it to the fourth round there, having never reached that far in a major before that. A singles win in the Davis Cup the week after the Australian Open added to his sparkling show.

Unfortunately for Nishioka, things haven’t looked as bright in either Delray Beach or Acapulco. McDonald had his revenge in the second round at the former while Frances Tiafoe registered a straight-set win over the Japanese number one at the latter.

Can he now shrug those results off and get going here?

Qualifier Garin Sends Galan Packing

Garin’s poor form in recent time has meant he has lost major traction on the ATP Rankings, going from his former world number 17 to his current 97th on the ATP charts.

Interestingly, Garin was the 17th seed in this competition two years but again, things have capitulated rather badly for him. Which is why his results in this tournament would have come as a relief to him.

He came through against Learner Tien and Filip Misolic to make it to the main draw here where he drew Daniel Elahi Galan in the first round. Now Galan is a higher-ranked player than Garin but in such woeful touch that it wasn’t a surprise that the Chilean player started a favourite.

And he played like one too to win easily in straight sets. In a match lasting an hour and 32 minutes, Garin came through 6-4, 6-2. He broke Galan three times in the match while saving both his break-points.

Does Garin have a chance here though?

Nishioka v Garin Prediction and Tip

Nishioka is a heavy favourite here despite his two defeats in three matches which came against players well-versed on this surface. Against Garin, he should feel at home and register a straight-set win.
