Matteo Berrettini v Taro Daniel Head to Head

Four previous meetings between these two players have led to three wins for Berrettini. Daniel had won their first match in 2018 in Istanbul, before Berrettini won the next two on clay and another one on the hardcourts of Napoli last year.

Berrettini Returns after Acapulco Retirement

Berrettini has come in for some criticism from some quarters for his lack of focus on the sport but one must quickly add that injuries have played their part too.

As recently as the Acapulco Open last week, Berrettini had to retire from his quarterfinal against Holger Rune because of a fitness concern. To make matters worse, he had lost seven games in a row in that encounter and had won a total of only seven points before calling it quits.

The onlooking fans weren’t happy and booed him out of the court as a result.

That loss followed a first round exit at the Australian Open where he had gone down to Murray in five sets after which he was out of action for nearly a month and a half.

The good news for Berrettini is that there haven’t been too many lasting effects of the injury from last week and he is back on court for this second round match. And facing a player he has beaten three times in a row should make the task easier too.

Daniel Goes Past Carballes Baena

Roberto Carballes Baena is more known for his clay court performances and it was no surprise that Daniel, despite being ranked outside the top 100 at the moment had gone into their opening round encounter as a 2/5 favourite.

He played like a favourite too, carving out a 6-1, 7-5 win over Carballes Baena in a match lasting an hour and 44 minutes.

Having made it to the main draw of the tournament by winning a couple of qualifying rounds, Daniel was off to a flier in the first set as he broke Carballes Baena twice to wrap it up in double-quick time.

Daniel faced a few break-points in the second, but went 4-2 ahead before getting a chance to serve out the match. Carballes Baena broke back to level things out at 5-5 but then dropped his own serve before Daniel clinched the win off the second time he served for the match.

Berrettini v Daniel Prediction and Tip

Berrettini should not have a lot of issues but the one thing to see is how he goes about his fitness. Daniel could sneak in with a set if the Italian starts off a little slowly.
