Daria Kasatkina v Varvara Gracheva Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, both meetings taking place in Melbourne.

Kasatkina won their match in the Philip Island Trophy in 2021, but it was Gracheva who emerged victorious from their meeting in the Australian Open earlier this year.

Kasatkina Brushes Aside German

Kasatkina was given a first round bye, courtesy of her seeding, entering the tournament at the second round stage with a match against the German Tatjana Maria, the world number 70.

At 35, Maria, who reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon last year, is a comparative veteran, and she proved no match for her younger opponent.

The match, though, began with a sequence of five games which went against serve, with Kasatkina a break to the good at the end of it. She then won the next three games to clinch the first set.

An early break of serve in the second set put Kasatkina in an even stronger position. The beginning of the end, as far as the German was concerned, was when she failed to convert either of the break back points she had earned herself.

Gracheva Maintains Her Austin Form

Gracheva has maintained the form that saw her reach the final in Austin by winning all four of her matches in Indian Wells so far.

That run began in the qualifying competition with wins over Petra Marcinko of Croatia in straight sets, before edging a titanic struggle with the German, Anna-Lena Friedsam.

She was second favourite in her first round match with fellow qualifier Ysaline Bonaventure, but beat the Belgian in straight sets, conceding just five games in the process.

Her next opponent, Petra Martic of Croatia, the number 25 seed, appeared a bigger obstacle to progress, at least on paper, but Gracheva rose to the challenge, with one break of serve enough to earn her the first set.

The first four games of the second serve were shared, but then Gracheva broke again and then once more, giving her the chance to serve out which she duly did.

She had only faced two break points on her own serve all match.

Kasatkina v Gracheva Prediction and Tip

Due to her world ranking and seeding, Kasatkina will start the favourite, but she will need to respect the threat posed by Gracheva, who is in fine form right now, and who won their last match at the Australian Open.
