Maria Sakkari v Karolina Pliskova Head to Head

The two players share quite a rivalry, having played five times already. It’s 3-2 in advantage for Pliskova, who won their last two meetings – including the round of 32 bout in WTA Dubai last month.

Sakkari Moves Past Kalinina

Needing two and a half hours, number seven seed Maria Sakkari dismissed Anhelina Kalinina 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to once again reach the fourth round in Palm Springs. Last time, she made it as far as the final before losing to Iga Swaitek. This time around, however, her chances of repeating such a feat are not that high.

In the opening match, she stuttered against Shelby Rogers in the first set – which she lost before staging a comeback and winning the match 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.

These wins put Sakkari’s year-to-date tally to 13-5, with her highlights being three semifinal appearances in across Linz, United Cup, and Doha. The current #7 also featured in Dubai and the Australian Open but had to settle for early exits.

Maria has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the last couple of seasons, thus successfully cementing her place in the top 10. Although she is quite consistent, her lack of winner’s silverware is preventing her from reaching the top.

Pliskova Upsets Kudermetova

Former World No. 1 Karolina Pliskova made quick work of the in-form Russian Veronika Kudermetova 6-1, 7-5. The 17th-seeded Czech built on that victory with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 win over Anna Kalinskaya in her opening bout.

After spending the bulk of the last season recuperating and practising following her tryst with a hand injury, Pliskova looks confident enough to find her way to her glory days.

The 30-year-old is now 15-5 in 2023, backed by quarterfinal showings in Melbourne and Dubai. At the same time, her lack of momentum is evident from her losses to the likes of Danielle Collins, Magda Linette, and Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Sakkari v Pliskova Prediction and Tip

In all fairness, this match can swing either way. Pliskova may be rusty, but her incredible pedigree (32 career finals compared to Sakkari’s 7) puts her in solid contention.

It all comes down to fitness at this point, and if the Czech starts well, she may very well give her opponent a run for her money.
