Tiafoe Cruises Into Fourth Round

No. 14 seed Frances Tiafoe cruised past another opponent on Sunday to reach the fourth round of the Indian Wells Open for the first time.

The 25-year-old American, who was knocked out in the third round in the previous two years, has looked in excellent form this year’s edition. First, he defeated fellow American Marcos Giron 6-2, 6-2 in the second round and then he eased past Australia’s Jason Kubler in the third round on Sunday.

After both players held serve over the first five games of the match, Tiafoe broke Kubler to love to lead 4-2 and then he protected the lead to close out the first set.

In the second, Tiafoe faced his only break point of the match in his first service game, but he saved it and then looked in complete control for the rest of the contest. He broke Kubler twice before registering a 6-3, 6-2 victory.

With the two wins, Tiafoe improved to 12-3 for the season. Following his heroics at the United Cup, Tiafoe lost in the third round at the Australian Open and made it to the quarterfinals in Dallas and Acapulco. Can he reach a third quarterfinal in a row?

Tabilo Continues to Impress

Playing just his third Masters 1000 tournament, Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo has been extremely impressive. The lefty made his way into the fourth round of the tournament following a third consecutive straight sets win on Sunday.

His latest victory came over Australia’s Jordan Thompson in the third round. The world no. 187 got the solitary break to win the first set.

In the second, it was Jordan who broke first, and built a 2-5 lead. Tabilo got the break back and then saved a set point on his serve to make it 5-5.

In the tiebreak, it was the world no. 87 who looked to be running away after building a 3-6 lead, but a determined Tabilo hung on. He saved all the three set points and won five straight points to win the match 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).

Having qualified for the main draw with three-set wins over Christopher O’Connell and Zachary Svajda respectively, Tabilo defeated Germany’s Maximilian Marterer 6-4, 6-3 in the first round. He then withstood 28 aces from Maxime Cressy in the second round before stunning the American 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (15-13).

Tabilo had not won a tour-level main draw match this year. The 25-year-old has now won three. Can he keep the dream run going?
