Carlos Alcaraz v Felix Auger-Aliassime Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between these two players and Auger-Aliassime has won every single time including the semifinal of the Basel Open last year.

Alcaraz Benefits from Draper Retirement

While it was a Jack Draper injury that helped Alcaraz to ease into the quarterfinal, it must be quickly added that the Spaniard looked to be on the top of the game at that time.

The 21-year-old Brit had suffered an abdominal issue in his previous round against compatriot Andy Murray and seemed to be in strife as a result of that. Alcaraz took full advantage, and was leading 6-2, 2-0 when Draper retired from the encounter.

This follows straight-set wins for Alcaraz in the previous rounds as well.

After getting a first round bye, Alcaraz routed Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second and then overcame Tallon Griekspoor in a hard-fought third round match.

A semifinalist last year at this tournament, Alcaraz is now 11-1 for the season and will hope to shrug off his poor record against Auger-Aliassime as he takes court.

Auger-Aliassime Scrapes Past Paul

In what turned out to be a ripper of a contest, Auger-Aliassime overcame six match-points to clinch his quarterfinal berth at the Indian Wells Open.

Needing two hours and 48 minutes in the match, Auger-Aliassime came back from a set down to only fall 3-0 down in the final set. He broke back to level the proceedings but then was 0-40 down while serving to stay in the match at 5-6 in it.

Saving three match-points there, he came back to push the set into a tie-breaker where Paul now took a 6-3 lead. If he had thought, however, that Auger-Aliassime would give up at that stage, he would have been mistaken.

Because Auger-Aliassime came back to get it back to 6-6, and then won a further two points to pocket the encounter and seal his quarterfinal berth for the first time in this competition.

Can he now play with the same spirit against the in-form, world number two?

Alcaraz v Auger-Aliassime Prediction and Tip

Alcaraz will be a huge favourite in this one but take nothing away from the potential of a fighting showing from Auger-Aliassime. The one big thing in favour of Alcaraz is the court condition, and its slowness will help him no end.
