Mackenzie McDonald and Daniel Elahi Galan are tied at 1-1 in their head-to-head. The American won their tour-level meeting earlier this year in Adelaide via a retirement.

Mackenzie McDonald has played some good stuff on hard courts this year, a surface he predominantly loves to play and enjoyed reasonable success throughout his career.
McDonald is 12-7 for the season. But four of his seven defeats have all come against Top-20 opposition, with the likes of Hilger Rune, Taylor Fritx, Frances Tiafoe, and Tommy Paul preventing the 27-year-old from making deep runs in the last four tournaments he has played in.
The California native produced the biggest win of his career at this year’s Australian Open when he knocked out defending champion Rafael Nadal in the second round.
But in a curious twist of fate, McDonald’s body turned against him in his next round, where he lost to Yoshitio Nishioka in straight sets. He lost to the Japanese lefty twice on Australian soil (lost to Nishioka in Adelaide too).
He enters this year’s Miami Masters looking to equal or better last year’s third-round showing.

Galan Has One Win in 2023
Daniel Elahi Galan is one of the very few players in the top 100 who have largely underperformed in the first quarter of 2023. Not even a return to the red clay in South America gave a new lease of life.
The Colombian has one win from seven tournaments in 2023, and his place inside the top 100 is in real jeopardy should he afford another early slip-up in Miami.
What is even more worrying for Galan is that he has only managed to win one set in those defeats. Confidence seems to be a real issue and injuries and niggles have stalled his progress.
On a bright note, he has never lost a Miami Open main draw match in the opening round, winning on each of his two trips to Florida. Could he get his campaign back on track this week?

As far as cushy draws go, this should be a comfortable opening-round win for McDonald. Galan is 1-7 this season and he is unlikely to change that record anytime season with the way he has been playing.
