Dominic Thiem v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players, both of which came on clay. They have both won a match apiece.

At Kitzbuhel in 2019, it was Thiem who came through in straight sets before Sonego had his revenge in Rome in 2021.

Thiem on a Four-Match Losing Spree

Continuing his free-fall as far as the results go, Thiem lost his fourth match in a row two weeks ago at the Indian Wells Masters and will now be wondering what’s next for him.

This latest loss had followed three defeats on the bounce on clay, with Thiem having won just one match in the South American Swing, spread across three different tournaments. In all, Thiem has been a part of nine matches this season and won just one of those.

To add to that, Thiem is yet to win a match in a hardcourt competition.

Such has been Thiem’s discomfiture that players are going into matches against him knowing they can defeat him. And we aren’t even talking about the top players but even those outside the top 50.

That being the issue, it’s difficult to predict how will Thiem go against Sonego who might be a clay-courter and ranked 59th, but still have a chance to compete.

Sonego 5-8 for the Season

While Sonego’s record this year might not be as bad as Thiem has put up so far, it’s still not quite up to the scratch.

Sure, Sonego is more of a clay-courter and doesn’t boast of an excellent record in hardcourt competitions anyway but he would have liked to do a lot better than five wins and eight defeats.

Add to that the fact that Sonego has lost five matches in the first round of tournaments and we are looking at a player who hasn’t found his rhythm this year at all.

These losses include an opening loss at the Indian Wells Open two weeks ago where he was sent out in the first round by 8/5 underdog Jason Kubler.

There’s one mitigating factor in Sonego’s overall record for the season. Other than that loss to Kubler, in none of the other matches had he entered the match as a favourite. That can be attributed to the luck of his draw.

Against Thiem though he is a favourite and would back himself to win.

Thiem v Sonego Prediction and Tip

Sonego is 1/2 to win and we will have to back the Italian against a player who, by the looks of things, seems to have forgotten what it feels like to win.
