Pella Uses Protected Ranking Again

Guido Pella has been working his way up the rankings, halving it in the space of two months, but still well below the threshold to get main draw entry at the top-tier ATP events.

Pella, currently outside the top 500, has cashed in on his protected ranking status following a year-long rehabilitation from a chronic knee injury.

The Argentine is a former top-20 player and has earned two wins this year, with his most recent win over Thiago Monteiro in Indian Wells likely to lift his spirits and confidence ahead of his first trip to the Miami Open since 2019.

It’s not been an event where Pella has excelled even in his peak years, with the lefty making the third round back in 2017 – his best result in Florida.

Varillas Switching Back to Hard Courts

Juan Pablo Varillas, like Pella, played during the South American Golden Swing where he put together a fine run in Buenos Aires, reaching the semifinal there as a qualifier.

It was a jaw-dropping run of results in Argentina’s capital for the Peruvian who defeated former world No. 3 Dominic Thiem and current top-20 player Lorenzo Musetti in back-to-back matches.

Although Varillas lost three of his next four matches, he came up against high-quality opposition, including Cameron Norrie, Sebastian Baez, and Nicolas Jarry.

Varillas will need to adapt pretty quickly here, as he returns to hard courts for the first time since a five-set thriller against Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open.

Pella v Varillas Prediction and Tip

Pella has shown some patches of brilliance despite falling short in most matches in his comeback season. Expecting a three-setter in this one, with the former top-20 player getting a rare main-draw win.
