Zhang Shuai last won a match on January 31. Since then she has lost five matches in a row, including the one in Indian Wells when she pulled out of the second round against Rebecca Peterson after just three games.
Zhang enjoyed her best run this year at the Australian Open, where she reached the fourth round. It was the only tournament this year where he won consecutive matches. Outside Melbourne, she has won just one more match in 2023 and that win came in Lyon. Therefore, she comes to Miami with a 4-8 season record.
The 34-year-old is a three-time champion on the tour. She reached two final last year, winning the title in Lyon and finishing runner-up in Birmingham.
Zhang will be playing in Miami for the 11th time this year. She reached the third round twice in 2017 and 2022, but is yet to go beyond that round.

Andreeva Knocks Out Krueger
World no. 128 Erika Andreeva ousted Ashlyn Krueger in straight sets to win the battle of wild cards 7-5, 6-2.
The Russian, who is making her WTA 1000 debut, faced just two break points in the match and was broken on both the occasions. However, she held 10 break points, and converted half of them during the one hour and 34 minute contest to claim her first victory at a WTA 1000 tournament.
Andreeva is 10-8 across levels this year. She had also won her first round match in Lyon, where she was a qualifier and her first round match in Austin, where she made a main draw as a lucky loser.
The 18-year-old was impressive against the world no. 155 in the first round, but will have er task cut out against the world no. 27.

Form may not be on Zhang’s side, but her experience definitely gives her the edge in this contest. She has been a regular in Miami over the last decade and was in pretty good form last year. Expect her to end her losing run and return to winning ways.
