Karen Khachanov v Francisco Cerundolo Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the Montreal Open last season and Khachanov had won that in three sets.

Khachanov Stuns Tsitsipas

Khachanov had played six previous times against Stefanos Tsitipas and lost them all. He had also lost 23 matches in a row against top-10 players coming into this one.

Which is why a straight-set win for Khachanov in this fourth round match speaks volumes about how well he has come about this season. Add his Australian Open semifinal appearance in 2023 (where he had lost to Tsitsipas) and we could be looking at a player who has a chance to break into the top 10 at some point this season.

The Russian took a shade over an hour and 32 minutes for his 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over Tsitsipas before acknowledging he has been playing despite suffering an injury following his Australian Open exploits.

Enduring 11 aces off the Tsitsipas racquet, Khachanov saved two break-points and won a whopping 89% of his first serve points to thwart his third-ranked opponent from testing him too much.

He now faces a player who has done well in Miami in 2022 as well, so it could well turn out to be a keen tussle.

Cerundolo Shrugs off Slow Start against Sonego

A semifinalist in the previous edition of the Miami Open, Cerundolo looked to have made a slow start to his fourth round match against Lorenzo Sonego. He slowly came back, however, to win it in three and seal off his quarterfinal berth.

The Argentine, who was a 13/10 favourite in this encounter, came through 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a match lasting two hours and three minutes.

Despite leading 3-2 with a break of serve in hand, Cerundolo went on to lose the opening set as Sonego reeled off four games in a row. In the second set, Cerundolo earned himself two service breaks and while he was broken back once that did not change the path of the set.

It became a lot easier by the decider as Sonego just fell apart with his serving winning a mere 12 of the 25 points off it.

Cerundolo has already defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime in this tournament but given Khachanov’s form, that could be a slightly different equation.

Khachanov v Cerundolo Prediction and Tip

Khachanov can be expected to grab this and we think it might not even go into a third set.
