Shelton Makes Clay Court Debut

It’s a rather stunning piece of information this that Shelton, who is currently at his career-best ranking of 39th in the world, has never played in a clay court competition at the highest level.

Scratch that. Shelton hasn’t participated in a Challenger on clay either.

His only few matches on the red dirt came in 2021, his first pro year where he featured on the Futures tour. Since then his rise to the top 40 has been spectacular. That very season, two years ago, Shelton was ranked 1835th in the world before ending the year at 573rd.

By 2022, he had broken into the top 100 winning three Challenger titles.

And this year a run through to the quarterfinal of the Australian Open has helped him jump up to his current 39th rank. Can he now display his exploits on clay as well?

Lestienne on a Four-Match Losing Streak

After a first round exit at the Adelaide International at the hands of Novak Djokovic, Lestienne looked to have found his way when he reached the semifinal of the Auckland Open in the second tournament he played this season.

Since then, however, Lestienne’s form has fallen away and he has won just one main draw match spread across six tournaments.

And if one counts only main draw results, Lestienne is one a six-match losing streak, having last won a match at the Australian Open.

The good news for the 30-year-old Frenchman is he has been a solid clay-court player throughout his initial career and it’s only more recently has he begun doing well in hardcourt competitions. The not so good news is his lack of results on clay in the last couple of years which could play a part here.

Can he trouble the first-timer?

Shelton v Lestienne Prediction and Tip

While Shelton hasn’t played on clay before it does look like he has all the tools to overcome the experienced but struggling Lestienne in this one. Might need three sets though.
