Daniil Medvedev v Jannik Sinner Head to Head

Five matches played and Medvedev has won every one of them. Interestingly all of these matches have come in indoor hardcourt competitions with their latest meeting having been at the Rotterdam Open final earlier this season.

Medvedev Stretched by Khachanov

Such has been Karen Khachanov’s form that one expected him to test the might of his countryman Medvedev in their semifinal. As it turned out, Medvedev himself has shown an extended excellent run and in the end it was that self-belief that saw him through to the final.

In a match that lasted two hours and 19 minutes, Medvedev shrugged off a second set loss to carve out a 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-3 win over Khachanov. Slamming 13 aces and winning 75% of his first serve points, Medvedev also faced six break-points but managed to restrict Khachanov to two breaks.

Medvedev also managed to get the better of his opponent’s serve twice including once in the deciding set off the only break-point that was on show in it.

He did have a chance to serve it out at 5-3 in the first set but Khachanov displayed early signs of his grittiness by breaking back in the ninth game. It was only in the tie-breaker that Medvedev managed to loosen his opponent’s hold and clinch the lead.

This final appearance follows a season in which Medvedev has already won 28 matches to go with a mere three defeats, clinched three titles and has been a finalist on one other occasion.

Sinner Shocks Alcaraz

Such had been Carlos Alcaraz’s run up to this semifinal match against Sinner he had come into the encounter as a 2/5 favourite. And when he won the first set, albeit in a hard-fought fashion it did look like the writing was on the wall.

Sinner, however, isn’t tipped to be one of those players who actually can win a Grand Slam in a not-so-distant future for nothing. He fought back, shrugging the loss of the first set to win it in three sets and a tad over three hours.

Such was the strength of Sinner’s comeback that Alcaraz, who was 18-1 for the season before that, dropped his serve twice in the deciding set to lose 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2.

With that win, Sinner has now registered his 21st win of the year to go with just four defeats. Already having won one title this season, Sinner has also one other final and was a semifinalist at the Indian Wells Open two weeks ago where he had gone down to Alcaraz.

He has avenged that loss – can he do the same to Medvedev after having lost to the Russian in Rotterdam earlier in 2023?

Medvedev v Sinner Prediction and Tip

Medvedev’s hold over Sinner can be seen in their head to head, and add to that his brilliant form we could be looking at the world number five running away with this one. A strong start for Sinner could quickly turn out to be a straight-set win for Medvedev once the latter gets his groove.
