Barring a quarterfinal appearance at the Cordoba Open earlier this year, Sousa’s performances this season have raised question-marks about the rest of his career.
The former winner of this tournament in Estoril, Sousa hasn’t won a single main draw match at the highest level other than those two in Cordoba in 2023. And that was further accentuated by his poor showing in Girona last week where he featured in a Challenger tournament.
The Portuguese player scrambled to a three-set win in the first round there before falling in the second to the 237th-ranked Mariano Navone despite starting out a favourite.
That opening win had earlier broken a string of six successive defeats across all levels but he failed to build on it. Will he find a way to get going here?

Zeppieri Solid in 2023
Other than attempting to qualify for the Australian Open, Zeppieri has opted to focus his attention on only the Challenger circuit and has done rather well on it. From the 20 matches he has played this season including the two at the qualifiers of the season’s first major, Zeppieri has won 15.
And in winning those 15, the 21-year-old has already clinched a title at Cherbourg and made the final of another Challenger in Rovereto.
That tournament win was his second on the Challenger circuit and pushed him to his career-best ranking of 115th on the ATP charts. He has settled back to his current ranking of 124th in the world.
Another string of impressive results could help Zeppieri break into the top 100 for the first time and given he is up against a struggling veteran, he would have a good chance to make it his fourth career win at the highest level.
