Fabio Fognini v Alessandro Giannessi Head to Head

Fognini won their only tour level meeting on clay in 2017.  They also met once at the lower level with Fognini winning that match in Genova in 2010.

Fognini Struggling in 2023

Fabio Fognini has featured in seven tournaments this season but he has won just one match so far and that win came against Chile’s Tomas Barrios Vera Marcelo on clay in Rio.

He has an overall season record of 1-7 this season and is currently on a four-match losing streak. His most recent defeat came against Jan-Lennard Struff in the first round of the Miami Open.

The Italian has won eight of his nine titles on clay; and throughout his career, clay has been his preferred surface. However, he last won a title at the Monte-Carlos Masters in 2019.

Last year, he had a 12-12 record on clay and was a semifinalist in Rio and Belgrade.

The 35-year-old world no. 91 will be playing in Estoril for the first time. Can he find some momentum in this tournament? A good start can certainly help.

Giannessi Comes Through Qualifiers

Alessandro Giannessi has been in excellent form at the Challenger level this year and he will be hoping to replicate that form at the tour level as he braces to play his first tournament in Estoril.

The world no. 261 showed great fighting ability over the weekend, as he bounced back from a set down two days in a row to qualify for the main draw.

First, he rallied to beat Ukraine’s Oleksii Krutykh 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the first qualifying round on Saturday and then he rebounded against Italian Fábián Marozsán in the second qualifying round to win 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.

Giannessi has an overall record of 17-9, across levels this year, and he is 15-6 on clay. He won his fourth Challenger title in Zadar, Croatia in March and was also a semifinalist in Tigre-1 and Tigre-2 Challengers.

So overall, the Italian has been in good form on clay and will make things difficult for the struggling Fognini.

Fognini v Giannessi Prediction and Tip

Although Giannessi has been in good touch on clay this year, the experienced Fabio Fognini will still be the favourite. The season has been a tough one for Fognini so far but he will be hoping to get into the form early in Estoril. Expect Fognini to start with a win but he may need three sets to advance.
