Dominic Thiem v Sebastian Ofner Head to Head

Thiem leads Ofner 2-0. Both those wins came in Kitzbuhel, once in 2019 and the other time in 2022.

Thiem is 1-8 in 2023

Dominic Thiem has struggled big time this year and as a result of his poor form the Austrian has fallen out of the top 100 once again. He had briefly broken back into the top 100 at the start of the season but a string of defeats has seen him fall steadily in the rankings.

Currently ranked no. 111, the former world no. 3 won his only tour-level match of the season in Buenos Aires, where he defeated Alex Molcan in the first round. He has lost five consecutive matches since then and most recently lost in the first rounds in Indian Wells and Miami.

A 17-time champion on the tour, Thiem will be playing in Estoril for the second time. Last year he was knocked out in the first round.

The 29-year-old, who has a 71% win record on clay, has won 10 titles on the surface. The one-time Grand Slam winner is also a two-time finalist at the French Open; but over the last two years, a wrist injury and lack of form has seen him struggle at the top level.

Can Estoril begin the turnaround for him in 2023?

Ofner Qualifies for the Main Draw

Sebastian Ofner qualified for his first tour-level main draw of the season with a come-from-behind win over Portugal’s Frederico Ferreira Silva in the second qualifying round on Sunday.

The world no. 137 squandered a set point in the first set to lose it in the tiebreak, but he clawed his way back in the second set tiebreak and then dominated the last with two breaks of serve to beat Silva 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.

Earlier in the first qualifying round, Ofner had beaten Robin Haase 6-3, 6-4.

While Ofner has not played on the tour this year, he has been in splendid touch at the Challenger level, reaching three finals this year. However, he could not add to his three previous Challenger titles, losing all three finals.

He fell to Alexander Shevchenko in Tenerife and to Fábián Marozsán and Alessandro Giannessi in Antalya and Zadar respectively.  Overall, Ofner is 19-9 this season and 11-3 on clay. He will hope to make a strong start in Estoril.

Thiem v Ofner Prediction and Tip

Thiem has struggled for form this year, but he is a high quality player and will use all his experience in the first round match against his compatriot. He has also won both their previous meetings and one of those wins came last year. So he holds the psychological edge as well.

Given Ofner’s form, he can take a set of Thiem, but the latter is expected to edge through into the next round.
