The last two tournaments have seen France’s Luca Van Assche win back-to-back Challenger titles and as a result of those successes the 18-year-old climbed into the top 100 for the first time in his career this week.
Moving 17 places in the rankings following Sunday’s triumph at the San Remo Challenger, Van Assche is now sitting on a career-high ranking of no. 91.
The Frenchman is 13-7 overall this season, but he has lost all three of his tour level matches so far. In fact, he is 0-4 overall on the tour and is looking for his first main draw win of his career. Could that come in Estoril on Tuesday?
He is in red-hot form at the moment and will be the favourite to win his opener.
Van Assche won the Pau Challenger title by beating Arthur Rinderknech in the semifinal and Ugo Humbert in the final of the indoor tournament, which concluded on March 5th.
In his next tournament on clay in San Remo, he defeated Juan Pablo Varillas in the final to lift the title. As a result he is 5-0 on clay this year. Can he keep that form going?

Sousa Makes It to the Main Draw
Portugal’s Pedro Sousa made it to the main draw of his home event with a straight sets win over Skatov, Timofey of Kazakhstan in the second qualifying round on Sunday.
The win followed Sousa’s three-set comeback win over Jozef Kovalík in teh first qualifying round on Saturday.
Sousa, ranked no. 467th in the world, has not played much tennis this year. He will be playing his first tour-level main draw match of the season on Tuesday and brings an overall season record of 5-5 into the tournament.
His best this year was a quarterfinal finish in a Challenger tournament.
The 34-year-old, who was a finalist in Buenos Aires in 2020, will be making his fifth appearance in Estoril. He has never gone beyond the round of 16 though.
