Varvara Gracheva v Anna-Lena Friedsam Head to Head

Friedsam leads the rivalry 2-1. This year they met twice and they have shared the spoils with Friedsam winning in the qualifying in Linz and Gracheva winning in the qualifying round in Indian Wells.

World no. 46 Varvara Gracheva is in terrific form at the moment. The Russian will be playing her first clay court tournament of the season in Charleston.

Gracheva brings a 21-11 season record into the tournament. She reached her first ever WTA final in Austin last month, but finished runner-up to Marta Kostyuk.

She then went on to reach the round of 16 of a WTA 1000 tournament for the first time in Indian Wells and followed that up by reaching the last 16 in Miami. In both the tournaments she had made the main draw through the qualifiers.

Earlier she also reached the third round of the Australian Open for the first time.

Gracheva also scored three top 10 wins this year. She defeated Daria Kasatkina at the Australian Open and the Indian Wells Open and ousted Ons Jabeur in Miami.

She is a good clay court player and all nine of her ITF finals have come on clay. She has a 7-2 record in those finals. Gracheva will be hoping to make a solid start in Charleston as well.

Friedsam Wins Back-to-Back Three-Setters in Qualifiers

Anna-Lena Friedsam won back-to-back three-set matches to make her way into the main draw in Charleston.

Friedsam won the first qualifying round against Liv Hovde, holding off the American 7-6, 4-6, 6-2. In the second qualifying round, the German defeated another American Asia Muhammad 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

Friedsam is 12-6 across levels this year. She was a quarterfinalist in Linz and Austin and qualified for the main draw in Miami recently, but she was beaten in the opening round.

Friedsam did not qualify for any other tournament this year, and in Charleston, she will be making only her fourth main draw appearance of the season.

Gracheva is in tremendous form this season and she will hold the edge despite Friedsam’s superior head-to-head record. Expect the German to put up a tough fight but the Russian is expected to edge through.
