Alize Cornet v Anna Kalinskaya Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between these two players and Kalinskaya leads 2-1. All three were played last season with Kalinskaya winning in Indian Wells and Berlin while Cornet pulling one back at the Bad Homburg Open.

Cornet Faces No Worries against Crawley

It has been such a forgettable season for Cornet that she would know her win over Fiona Crawley in the first round here doesn’t amount to too much. Not when you are up against a player who isn’t ranked on the WTA circuit yet.

Especially when Cornet knows she was entering the match on the back of six successive defeats this season.

In the end, a 6-0, 6-2 win would give a sense of relief to the Frenchwoman but the greatest lies ahead now. The good news for Cornet is she isn’t alien to clay, having won four of her six career WTA titles on this surface.

She will also be up against a player who prefers hardcourt tennis to this surface and that could well be the opening she needs as she looks to build on her strangely long – it lasted an hour and 31 minutes – victory.

Kalinskaya Stuns Kalinina

Ranked 30th in the world, Anhelina Kalinina had gone into her opening round match against Kalinskaya as a 1/2 favourite. And two quick breaks later, she was 3-0 up and ready to run through her opponent very easily and seal her appointed second round place.

Instead, two hours later, Kalinskaya had shrugged off Kalinina’s two attempts at serving for the opening set and two set-points against her to win the match 7-6 (6), 6-4.

In a match filled with breaks of serves – there were a total of 11 of them – Kalinskaya’s biggest strength was that she hung in there and never let her opponent run away with the match. In doing so, she would have frustrated Kalinina who then made errors at the most inopportune of times to fall to a straight-set loss.

Kalinskaya now faces an opponent who has struggled all season and even starts off a favourite. The big challenge, however, is her own game isn’t quite suited for clay and that could make this an intriguing battle.

Cornet v Kalinskaya Prediction and Tip

While Kalinskaya starts off a 4/6 favourite there are no clear winner here for us and we will have to go with a three-setter.
