Victoria Azarenka v Sloane Stephens Head to Head

There have been seven previous meetings between these two players and Stephens surprisingly leads 4-3. What needs to be quickly added is their last match came in 2019 having first played in 2013, a time-frame in which Stephens was also at her best.

They have played just once on clay, in Madrid 2019, and it was Stephens who won in three.

Azarenka Hoping to Shrug off Sunshine Open Struggles

While Azarenka did have a solid start to the season when she reached the semifinal at the Australian Open, she hasn’t done the same justice to the results in the more recent past.

A second round loss in Doha was followed by a mini-recovery in Dubai where Azarenka made the third round but that was followed by just one win from three matches at Indian Wells and Miami. Defeats to Karolina Muchova and Camilla Giorgi would have hurt.

The other thing to look at is Azarenka’s record on clay which isn’t the best. Sure she has made the semifinal at the French Open once and has been a finalist at both, the Madrid and Italian Open but none of those have come in recent times.

Which is why while she is up against one of the more inconsistent former Grand Slam winners on tour, it would be interesting to see whether she is able to live up to her favourites tag.

Stephens Needs Three Sets against Chirico

Stephens was 3/10 to win her opener against the 165th-ranked Louisa Chirico but ended up needing an hour and 46 minutes and three to get past her fellow American opponent.

Having dropped her serve in the fourth game of the first set, Stephens fought back to make it 3-4 on serve but Chirico broke her again in the eighth game. This time she served it out to grab the early lead.

Almost immediately, Stephens went on an overdrive as she got the better of her opponent’s serve on two occasions in the second set. And she followed this up with two more breaks in the third, losing a mere seven and five points respectively on serve in the final two sets.

With Stephens having had a decent time on clay throughout her career, it’s interesting to note she is a heavy underdog here at 2/1. Can she shrug those odds off against a player who hasn’t had any rhythm in recent times?

Azarenka v Stephens Prediction and Tip

Azarenka starts off 2/5 to win this but will it be that easy against the former French Open runner-up. We don’t think so.
