Francesco Passaro v Alexandre Muller Head to Head

This will be their first meeting at the tour level. However, they met once on clay last year and Passaro won that match in straight sets.

Passaro Adds to Karatsev’s Woes

Francesco Passaro earned his first tour level win of the season as he knocked out Aslan Kartsev in the first round of the Marrakesh Open

The 22-year-old Italian, who is making just his second main draw appearance on the tour this year, came back from 1-4 down in the first set to take a one-set-to-love lead. He then got an early break in the second set but Karatsev clawed his way back into the contest to even the match at one set apiece.

Passaro took charge of the third with an early break and then held on to the advantage for a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 victory in two hours and 25 minutes.

The defeat was Karatsev’s sixth consecutive opening round defeat this season (this includes a Challenger event as well).

With the win, the world no. 115 Passaro improved his season record to 9-10. He has reached just one Challenger quarterfinal this year. A lot more was expected of him following a 53-28 season, across levels, last year. Passaro had featured in two ITF finals and five Challenger finals last year, winning one Challenger and one ITF tournament.

Having got his first win at the tour level in 2023, can he build on the start in Marrakech?

Muller Stuns Sixth Seed Gasquet

Alexandre Muller ousted world no. 42 and sixth seed Richard Gasquet in the opening round to advance into the round of 16.

This is the second tour level event that Muller is featuring in this year. His first was in Doha where, playing as a qualifier, he went on to reach the quarterfinal of the tournament before being knocked out by Andy Murray.

Muller needed just an hour and 41 minutes to beat the fellow Frenchman 6-4, 6-4. Both the sets had a similar feel with Muller breaking early and building a 5-2 lead in both the sets. Gasquet won consecutive games to keep the sets alive but Muller broke again in the final game of both the sets to seal the contest.

Muller improved to 20-10 across levels this season. The 26-year-old had also reached a Challenger final this year and two Challenger quarterfinals. He has a decent record on clay courts and will be hoping to reach a second tour level quarterfinal of the season with a win on Thursday.

Passaro v Muller Prediction and Tip

Passaro was dominant in their last meeting, beating Muller 6-1, 6-2 last year. But Muller is in much better form than the Italian this year and that gives him the edge in this contest.
