Magda Linette v Varvara Gracheva Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, and the current head to head record is one win apiece.

Linette beat Gracheva in straight sets on the clay of Strasbourg last year, but Gracheva got the better of their three set battle in Austin on hard courts in February.

Linette Reaches Career High Ranking

Linette has just reached a career high after reaching the fourth round in Miami, and these are golden days for Polish women’s tennis, with two players in the top 20.

All that came hard on the heels of her semi-final at the Australian Open, her best ever showing in a Grand Slam.

However, unlike compatriot Iga Świątek, there is no sense in which Linette is an overnight sensation.

She is now 31 years over, and has spent a number of years ranked in the middle of the top 100, before reaching her current exalted level.

The Pole was given a first round bye in Charleston.

Gracheva Sees Off German Qualifier

Off the court, Gracheva has made headlines with news that she is considering switching her nationality to French, She has lived in France for several years, and is growing increasingly fed up with the hostility she encounters in the locker room because of her current passport.

Meanwhile on the court, she is one of the most improved players so far this season and has already risen 54 places in the world rankings since the start of the season, with her Austin final a highlight.

Her first round opponent was the German qualifier Anna-Lena Freidsam, world ranked number 93.

It was the German who began the stronger, achieving an early break, but Gracheva recovered, got the break back, and, with nothing else to separate them, it went to a tie-break,

Gracheva had five set points, made slightly hard work of it by giving two of them up, but got the job done in the end.

However, an early break put her in control of the second set, which she then underpinned with a second.

Friedsam would win just three more points as Gracheva eased to victory.

Linette v Gracheva Prediction and Tip

There is very little to choose between two in-form competitors, and this match could easily go either way.

What could give Gracheva a slight edge is her familiarity with clay. She won seven titles on the surface in her time on the ITF circuit.
