Sofia Kenin v Irina Begu Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before in Cleveland last year, Kenin winning in straight sets.

Another Step on the Comeback Trail for Kenin

It is proving a long way back to the top of the women’s game for Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open champion and beaten French Open finalist that year, whose career subsequently has been hit by a loss of form and injury.

However, by reaching the third round of the Miami Open, she was able to climb back inside the top 150 again, and she took another step in the right direction by beating the world number 49, Aliaksandra Sasnovich, in the first round in Charleston.

Initially it looked like it would be a walk in the park for the American, as she breezed through the first set for the loss of one game.

Sasnovich had other ideas, though, as she rallied in the second set, which developed into a real tussle, and which eventually went to a tie-break, which Sasnovich claimed.

At the start of the third set, Sasnovich had a break point, and her failure to convert it soon proved costly. She was broken herself next game and then once more, with Kenin cruising to victory in the end.

Begu Eases Past Hungarian

Begu proved her ability on clay by winning the Palermo Open in Italy last July, her fifth major WTA title.

She had been struggling for form since reaching the semi-finals in Adelaide in January, but, back on a surface on which she feels more comfortable than American hard courts, she eased her way into the second round, beating the Hungarian world number 87, Dalma Galfi, without too much trouble.

The Hungarian had already saved two break points, by the time that she dropped her serve for the first time in the opening set. Another break enabled the Romanian to take the set for the loss of just one game.

When Galfi dropped her serve at the start of the second set, it looked like it might be a very short match. It is to her credit that she fought back with two breaks of her own, which gave her the chance to serve for the set.

Unfortunately, from her point of view, her nerve deserted her at the wrong moment. Begu broke her and reeled off four games in a row to clinch the win.

Kenin v Begu Prediction and Tip

At her peak, Kenin would have begun the favourite for this match, but she is still in comeback mode, and is playing an opponent who is a natural clay court player. That should give the Romanian the edge.
