Tommy Paul v Yannick Hanfmann Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players; one at the 2019 US Open qualifiers and the second at the Cagliari Open in 2021. Paul won the first while Hanfmann clinched the second one on clay.

Paul Turns His Attention to Clay

After kick-starting his season with a 16-6 win-loss record in hardcourt competitions that included a semifinal appearance at the Australian Open, Paul will now hope he can realise some of that potential on clay as well.

It won’t be easy though, as was on show last season.

Paul had featured in six clay-court competitions in 2022 and registered just two wins – in the first round of the Houston Open and Italian Open. Overall in his career, Paul has a 13-18 win-loss record on clay which is a far cry from the 86-61 record he posses in hardcourt competitions.

He now comes up against a player who has never been ranked better than 92nd in the world but at the same time loves his time on clay. Things won’t be easy for him.

Qualifier Hanfmann Edges Past Watanuki

Yosuke Watanuki hasn’t had any great results going for him on clay and like Hanfmann, had qualified for the event with a couple of wins. Hanfmann, on the other hand, has relished his time on the red dirt and 10 of his 12 career titles have come on clay.

Which is why this looked like bit of a mismatch but Watanuki gave it his all, fighting tooth and nail before Hanfmann managed to scrape past his opponent.

The German won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in a shade over two hours to seal his place in the second round in a tournament he had never played before.

Before this, Hanfmann had made the quarterfinal of the Santiago Open, defeating Pedro Martinez and Roberto Carballes Baena in the process. Another win here might not be the easiest bet but his clay court credentials do give him that chance to surprise Paul.

Paul v Hanfmann Prediction and Tip

Paul might not have it easy and even if he wins, it could take him three sets. Going with the over games market here.
