Alexandrova Rushes Past Putintseva

On paper Alexandrova had gone into her second round match against Yulia Putintseva as bit of a favourite but given her opponent’s spirited nature, it would have been difficult to expect the manner in which the match went.

Alexandrova was on court for a mere 70 minutes in her 6-1, 6-3 drubbing of Putintseva as she took a step closer to emulating her last season’s semifinal showing in this tournament.

Firing on all cylinders with her serving, Alexandrova sent down 10 aces and won 75% of her first serve points in the entire encounter. She was faced four break-points in the first set but saved them all but then found the going slightly tougher in the second.

Putintseva broke the Russian in the very first game of the set, only to drop her own serve in the second and sixth game. Serving at 4-2, Alexandrova then dropped her own serve but then broke back before wrapping things up.

This followed a quarterfinal showing in Miami for Alexandrova and she now faces an opponent who has never been a part of the top 80 on the WTA charts.

Grabher Has No Trouble against Vickery

Having earlier shocked Shuai Zhang in the first round, Grabher did not waste too much time over Sachia Vickery in the second to triple her win count for the season.

Before the start of this tournament, Grabher had won just one main draw match and that had come in Auckland in the first week of January. Since then, there had been a couple of qualifying victories in Dubai and another in an ITF tournament but nothing more.

Here, she has won two in two with the second of those coming in a mere hour and 20 minutes against a player who was a 8/11 favourite going into the contest. Grabher saved all the four break-points she faced against Vickery while breaking her opponent four times in her 6-1, 6-2 win.

The stakes will get a lot higher as she faces a world number 17 in round three but with the kind of confidence she has right now, there’s every chance she could test Alexandrova.

Alexandrova v Grabher Prediction and Tip

Expecting a tough tussle in one of the sets but for Alexandrova to still come through in two.
