Pavel Kotov v Christopher O’Connell Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came on the hardcourt surface of Doha in 2022 and O’Connell had won that qualifier in straight sets.

Kotov Shocks Bonzi

Benjamin Bonzi held the edge in his second round match against Kotov but when his opponent ran through him in the first set the way he did, even the Frenchman would have been surprised.

Kotov needed just 26 minutes to bagel his opponent in the first set, as he lost just three points on serve.

Sure, Bonzi came back in the second to take a 3-0 lead, but Kotov then broke his opponent twice – once when he served for the set at 5-3 and then again at 5-5. This time around Kotov served for the match when he lost his serve but then raced away to an easy win in tie-breaker that followed.

Having shocked Pedro Martinez in the first round, this has been the first time in his career that Kotov has won back to back matches in the main draw of an ATP tournament. Can he now make it three in a row?

O’Connell Stuns van de Zandschulp

Much like Kotov, O’Connell had also gone into his second round match against Botic van de Zandschulp as a second-favourite but what transpired was quite surprising.

O’Connell came back from squandering a set-point in the first set tie-breaker to win 6-7 (8), 6-4, 6-0 in a match lasting two hours and 43 minutes.

Where the Aussie seemed to have scored over his opponent is when the going got tough in the second set, he was at his clinical best. O’Connell did not face a single break-point in the second set but more vitally when he did get a chance – his only chance – he broke his opponent.

That was all he needed to level things out and O’Connell bull-dozed his Dutch opponent with three breaks of serve in the decider.

Can he now dish out something similar to Kotov?

Kotov v O’Connell Prediction and Tip

This could be anyone’s match but the thing to be noted here is O’Connell has shown in the past as well he can make things work out on clay. That, plus his fighting showing against van de Zandschulp make him a favourite for us.
