Dominic Thiem v Quentin Halys Head to Head

Thiem and Halys have never faced off before this.

Thiem Wins Successive Matches for a Change

The last time Thiem had won back to back matches in a competitive tournament was in October last year. It had come in Antwerp where Thiem reached the semifinal in what had been a stunning run, following another one in Gijon where he was a semifinalist too.

Since then, the Austrian had participated in nine tournaments and never carved out successive victories.

Which is why a 6-2, 6-2 rout of Ben Shelton in the second round, following his hard-fought win over fellow countryman Sebastian Ofner in the previous match, would have been such a huge relief for Thiem.

More so because of the manner of his win too. Down 0-2 in the first set, Thiem stormed back to win 12 of the next 14 sets to clinch his place in the last eight.

Interestingly, Thiem had earlier faced off against Shelton in the doubles competition as well and that would have given him an idea about things.

With Thiem having admitted his current goal is to make it to the top 100 on the rankings in order to make a direct entry into the French Open, a win here will go a long way in helping him in that endeavour.

Halys Makes it Two Shocks in a Row

It wasn’t the most straightforward of straight-set wins for Halys but going in as the second favourite, he would have been chuffed to take out Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut in their second encounter.

Halys won 7-6 (5), 7-5 in an hour and 43 minutes, as he slammed 14 aces in a cagey encounter that saw a total of just five break-points and three breaks of serves. There wasn’t much to choose between the two right throughout but for those moments of high-pressure in which Halys did a better job.

The first came in the 11th game when he was down a break-point but saved it and then won the set while serving at 6-5 in the tie-breaker. In the second, Halys fell 3-1 behind but came back to break his opponent in the fifth game and then again in 11th before wrapping it up on his own serve.

Halys was 7/5 to win his opener and 13/10 to win his second round match. He is still an underdog at 1/1 here, and the big question is if he can make it three in three?

Thiem v Halys Prediction and Tip

It’s a matter of Thiem winning three in a row for the first time since last October or Halys doing it despite going into all three matches as a second-favourite. Hard call this but given the conditions of the court, Thiem could hold a slight edge.
