Jessica Pegula v Belinda Bencic Head to Head

Bencic has won all three of their past meetings. What’s more, the Swiss has not dropped a set in the past three meetings. They last met at the U.S. Open in 2021.

A day after reaching her first Charleston quarterfinal, top seed Jessica Pegula stayed on course for a first title as she ousted 12th seed Paula Badosa to reach the semifinal stage.

Pegula needed an hour and 41 minutes to beat the Spaniard 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) on Friday.

With the one the in-form american has now improved her season record to 21-6. This is the fourth time she will be featuring in a semifinal of a WTA tournament this year.

Pegula was a finalist in Doha and reached the final four in Dubai and Miami. She had also played an important role in America’s run to the title at the inaugural United Cup.

Pegula had begun her Charleston campaign with a 6-2, 6-0 drubbing of Anna Blinkova in the second round. She then edged past Irina-Camelia Begu in a three-set round of 16 contest.

Against Badosa, Pegula won 79.5% points on the back of her first serve. She also converted 2 of 3 break points but failed to save the only one that she faced in the match.

Bencic Eases Past Alexandrova

Defending champion Belinda Bencic eased past Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets in the quarterfinal on Friday to reach the last four for the third time in Charleston.

The fourth seed needed an hour and 20 minutes to beat the world no. 17, 6-3, 6-3. Bencic converted 4 of 6 break points in the first set while failing to save either of the two break points that she faced.

In the second set, the Swiss did not face a single break point, while she converted one of the six break points that she held to move into the semifinals for the second straight year.

Last year, the world no. 11 had beaten Ons Jabeur in the title clash. She was also a semifinalist in the tournament in 2014.

Bencic had begun this year’s Charleston campaign with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Katherine Sebov in round two and then she knocked out Shelby Rogers 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in round three.

The Swiss is 19-5 this season and has already won titles in Adelaide-2 and Abu Dhabi. Can she continue her charge towards a third title of the year?

Bencic is the defending champion and also has a perfect record against Pegula. She has also won two titles this season, so the fourth seed will go into the semifinal with a lot of confidence. She has form on her side and also has the psychological edge over the American. It won’t be a surprise if she takes down the top seed.
