Casper Ruud v Quentin Halys Head to Head

The first time they ever met was on the Challenger circuit in 2017 and Halys had won that. In 2018 they faced off yet again at the Australian Open where their first round match went to 11-9 in the final set.

Ruud Crushes Baez

While Ruud was a favourite going into his quarterfinal against Sebastian Baez, not too many would have expected him to seal a win in the manner that he did.

In a match lasting a mere hour and 19 minutes, Ruud registered a 6-3, 6-0 victory over his Argentine opponent to seal his first semifinal appearance. In doing so, Ruud had also made it successive wins in a row for the first time this season.

Ruud started off by losing his serve in the very first game but from that point onward took control of his game and the match.

He broke right back in the second game, saved two more break-points before going 5-3 up. He served it out very soon before running away with the second set with three breaks of serves. Again, Baez did have four chances to break Ruud back but the world number five held on well.

With Ruud slowly rebuilding his form after a dismal start to the season, it would be interesting to see how he continues this for the rest of the clay court swing.

Halys Has No Problem with Thiem

Just when one thought that Dominic Thiem has found his rhythm, he came up against a determined Halys and fell in straight sets.

Halys needed a mere hour and 20 minutes to get past Thiem, winning 6-1, 6-4. The former US Open winner was allowed just two opportunities to break Halys but missed both even as the Frenchman made it three in three breaks.

Two of those came in the first before he notched up his solo break for the second set in the fifth game. Soon after that Halys had notched up his victory.

What’s been impressive to see in this tournament has been the manner in which Halys has gotten past his opponent – especially given their pedigree.

In fact Halys has gone into each of these three matches as an underdog, at 7/5 against Nuno Borges, 13/10 against Roberto Bautista Agut and he was 11/10 in the Thiem match.

Can he pull off something spectacular against Ruud?

Ruud v Halys Prediction and Tip

Ruud will know he is up against someone who has a lot of momentum and shock wins under his belt but the Norwegian player himself has shown what he’s capable of in a match against Baez. Backing him for a hard-fought but a straight-set win.
