Tiafoe Wins Two in One Day to Reach Semis

Top seed Frances Tiafoe marched into the semifinals of the Houston Open with a straight sets win over sixth seed Jason Kubler in the quarterfinal on Saturday.

Tiafoe wasn’t broken in the match as he saved the only break point he faced against the Australian. He had 13 chances to break Kubler and he capitalised on two of those to win the one hour and 27 minute contest 6-4, 6-4.

The world no. 15 also had to play his second round match the same day and he ousted fellow American Steve Johnson 6-2, 6-4.

Tiafoe wasn’t broken in that match either. In fact he did not face a single break point against Johnson and converted 3 of 5.

This is the first time that Tiafoe is seeded no. 1 at a tour level event and he is off to an excellent start. He is yet to add to his only ATP title that he won in Delray Beach in 2018, but has reached four more finals since then. He will be aiming to reach his sixth career final on Sunday afternoon.

Tiafoe is 17-6 so far this season.

Brouwer Breezes Past Wolf

Gijs Brouwer, too, played two different rounds on Saturday. However, he was already leading fourth seed John Isner 6-4, 5-6 in the second round on Thursday and he finished off that match quickly on Saturday, beating the big-serving American 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

The Dutchman followed that up with a quick straight sets win over fifth seed American JJ Wolf.

Brouwer served 8 aces against Wolf and did not face a single break point in the match while he converted 2 of 3 to score a 6-3, 6-4 win in an hour and 17 minutes.

Ranked no. 123 in the world, Brouwer is yet to be broken in the tournament. He had begun his campaign against Aleksandar Kovacevic in the first round and had won that match 6-4, 6-4, saving all four of the break points that he faced.

Against Isner, Brouwer did not face a break point but capitalised on the only breaking opportunity he held.

The lefty is 10-10 across levels this season and will be featuring in a first tour-level semifinal on Sunday. He could crack the top 100 by reaching the final of the tournament.

Tiafoe v Brouwer Prediction and Tip

Both players are in brilliant form and Tiafoe, despite holding a superior record and also being the superior player, will be wary of the Dutchman who shocked two top players on Saturday. However, in the end, Tiafoe should come out unscathed in the battle and reach another ATP final.
