Etcheverry Into Second Semifinal of the Season

Eighth seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry edged out 2019 Houston champion Cristian Garin in three to reach his second semifinal of the season.

The Argentine, who had not even reach a quarterfinal at the tour level before the start of the season, had made it to the finals in Santiago this year. He finished runner-up though, after losing the title clash to Nicolas Jarry.

Etcheverry was also a quarterfinalist in Buenos Aires and thanks to three wins in Houston, he has improved his season record to 13-8, including qualifiers. The world no. 74 is 9-4 on clay and on verge of a second tour-level final.

He had begun his Houston campaign with a straight sets win over compatriot Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the first round and then he knocked out Australia’s Max Purcell in a two-set second round contest.

Etcheverry’s toughest match of the tournament saw Garin take him into the third set in the quarterfinal, but the Argentine managed to come out on top.

Etcheverry Served 12 aces, won 77% points on the back of his first delivery, saved 5 of 6 break points and converted 4 of 9 to win the two hours and 37 minutes contest 6-1, 6-7 (2-7), 7-3.

Qualifier Hanfmann Cruises Into Semis

Facing the Argentine will be German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann, who upset second seed Tommy Paul in the second round on Saturday, before handing fellow qualifier Tomas Machac a straight sets drubbing a little later in the quarterfinal.

Hanfmann, who is looking to reach a third tour level final after his runner-up finishes in GStaad in 2017 and in Kitzbuhel in 2020, had made it to the main draw with straight set wins over France’s Enzo Couacaud and Argentina’s Facundo Diaz Acosta in the two qualifying rounds respectively.

The German then edged out Japan’s Yosuke Watanuki in a three-set first round contest.

In round 2 on Saturday, the world no. 134 converted 6 of 14 break points and saved 3 of 7 to beat the world no. 18 Paul 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.

The 31-year-old was even more dominant in the quarterfinal, trouncing Machac 6-2, 6-1 in just 65 minutes. Hanfmann dropped just 10 points on his serve in the entire match, converted half of the eight break points that he held and saved the only one that he faced to cruise into the semifinals.

The German is 17-9 across levels in 2023 and this is his best performance of the year. His second best so far, was a quarterfinal finish in Santiago.

Etcheverry v Hanfmann Prediction and Tip

Etcheverry is in top form, particularly on clay and the Argentine is expected to reach a second career final with a win on Sunday.
