They have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Rybakina Hoping to Convert Hardcourt Form to Clay

The winner of the Indian Wells Open where she defeated Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinal and final respectively, Rybakina then fell short of making it a Sunshine Double when she lost in the final in Miami.

Still, she had done enough to climb to number seven in the world, having earlier made it to the final of the Australian Open as well.

Rybakina will now hope she can transform her form on clay, which is quite clearly not her most preferred surface. This can be seen from her performances at the highest level with the Kazakh having made it to 10 tournaments finals on hardcourt surfaces and just two on clay.

And none of those clay court results have come since September 2020 when she to Elina Svitolina in the Strasbourg Open title-decider.

In the lead-up to last year’s Wimbledon title, Rybakina had shown some spark on clay but ended with a 7-5 win-loss record there. Can she better that this season?

Niemeier on a Six-Match Losing Streak

Niemeier did win her Billie Jean King Cup singles match against Beatriz Haddad Maia in the lead-up to this encounter on Saturday but before that she has had a struggle on her hands.

She has lost six successive matches coming into this opener against Rybakina and has an overall win-loss record of 2-11 for the season. Her only wins on the WTA Tour have come in Lyon and Linz late in January and early February but it’s been more than two months since that happened too.

The good news for Niemeier is she will now return to clay, her most preferred surface.

All five of her titles, which include four on the ITF circuit and one at the WTA 125 level in Makarska have come on clay. And while she did lose her first round tie on the clay courts of Charleston earlier this month, she will come into this match on a slightly more confident note.

Against Rybakina, however, things could get rather difficult.

Rybakina v Niemeier Prediction and Tip

Rybakina will be a strong favourite here despite this not being her preferred surface. Expect her to come through but might face some hardships.
