Daria Kasatkina v Paula Badosa Head to Head

Three previous meetings have resulted in two wins for Kasatkina. All of these matches were played last year.

In 2023, they were supposed to face off in Adelaide in the semifinal, but Badosa had pulled off from that match because of injuries.

Kasatkina Coming off Charleston Semifinal

While Kasatkina’s form coming into her first clay tournament of the season was patchy at best, she exhibited some sterling tennis to make it to the semifinal of the Charleston Open last week.

Kasatkina carved out wins over Madison Brengle, Bernarda Pera and Madison Keys to make it to the last four before Ons Jabeur had her number. And even that was in a fighting two-setter.

Last season, Kasatkina had featured in the Stuttgart Open and reached the second round, where coincidentally it was Jabeur who had gotten the better of her. A third round appearance at the Madrid Open followed soon after that but by the time she had made it to the semifinal in Rome, Kasatkina was in excellent rhythm.

And that showed at the French Open where she stormed into the semifinal before Iga Swiatek got past her easily.

Badosa Steady in Charleston

She was ranked second in the world last season and a string of poor results and fitness have pushed Badosa down to 31st on the WTA charts. The good news for her is she showed the kind of sparkle last that one could have expected from a player ranked in the top 10.

Featuring in Charleston, Badosa defeated Mayar Sherif, Leylah Fernandez and Diana Shnaider in straight sets in successive rounds to make it to the quarterfinal.

It was against Jessica Pegula that Badosa met her match but not before she did get her chances, especially in the second set. The question here for Badosa is if she can continue with that string of wins, although facing Kasatkina won’t be a particularly delicious opportunity.

On clay, however, things could even out a little given Badosa has done well on this surface including winning her maiden title in Belgrade in 2021 on dirt.

Kasatkina v Badosa Prediction and Tip

Kasatkina’s performance in Charleston was matched by Badosa which makes this an intriguing opening round contest. Badosa might hold a slight edge though.
