Bautista Agut’s Recent Form is a Cause of Concern

Two-time Barcelona Open quarterfinalist Roberto Bautista Agut will begin his 2023 campaign in the second round on Tuesday. The 13th seed had received a first round bye.

Bautista Agut had a bright start to the season, finishing runner-up in Adelaide-2 and making it to the fourth round of the Australian Open. However he has lost form ever since the tour moved from Australia.

The Spaniard has won just 2 of his last nine matches. One of those wins came in the opening round in Doha and the other came against Filip Krajinovic in the first round in Monte-Carlo last week. Bautista Agut, however, lost  his second round match in the Principality to Alexander Zverev.

The 11-time tour-level champion is 9-10 for the season and will be desperate to get into a rhythm.

The world no. 25 has a decent record on clay and is 7-6 in Barcelona. He had made it to the last eight in 2015 and 2018.

Zapata Miralles Eases Past Balazs

World no. 41 Bernabe Zapata Miralles made a quick start in Barcelona, knocking out Hungary’s Attila Balazs in just an hour and 15 minutes.

The 26-year-old Spaniard, who is making just his third appearance in Barcelona, improved his main draw record to 4-2 in the tournament.

Zapata Miralles was broken twice in the match, but he converted 6 of 11 break points to win the contest 6-2, 6-2. It has turned out to be a fantastic season for the Spaniard so far, as he has risen 31 places since the start of the season to reach his career-high ranking of no. 41.

He made it to his first two ATP semifinals in Buenos Aires and Rio and was also a quarterfinalist in Estoril. Overall he has a 10-10 record in 2023.

Having started off well can he pull off a surprise win over a struggling Bautista Agut on Tuesday?

Bautista Agut v Zapata Miralles Prediction and Tip
