Casper Ruud v Ben Shelton Head to Head

Shelton won their only meeting in Cincinnati last year.

Ruud Searching for Consistency

After an extraordinary 53-24 season last year, which saw Casper Ruud reach two Grand Slam finals and win three titles from seven finals overall, the expectations were quite high from the Norwegian in 2023.

However, Ruud has struggled to live up to that so far. He had a tough start, struggling to win consecutive matches in the first six tournaments of the year. He finally found form on clay in Estoril, where he claimed his 10th career title by defeating Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets.

Ruud looked to build on that performance in Monte-Carlo, where he started off with a straight sets win over Botic Van de Zandschulp in round two but failed to make the quarterfinals after suffering a shock defeat to Jan Lennard Struff.

The 24-year-old, who is currently ranked no. 3 in the world, is 10-7 overall this season, but 5-1 on clay, the surface where he found the most success in his early days. Nine of his 10 titles have come on clay and he will be looking to add another in Barcelona this week.

He is playing in the main draw in Barcelona for the third time. His best came last year, when he reached the last eight before falling to Pablo Carreno Busta.

Shelton Makes an Impressive Start

Twenty-year-old Ben Shelton, who played on clay for the first time two weeks ago in Estoril, made an impressive start at the Barcelona Open, knocking out fellow American Mackenzie Mcdonald in straight sets in the first round on Monday.

The lefty, who turned heads with his run to the quarterfinals on his Australian Open debut this year, served nine aces and converted 5 of 6 break points to beat the world no. 54, 7-6, 6-4.

Shelton improved his season record to 8-8 on the tour and 8-9 including a qualifier.

He is 2-2 on clay. His first victory on the surface had come in the first round in Estoril against Constant Lestienne but he was knocked out in round 2 by Domnic Thiem. He also lost his opening round fixture in Monte-Carlo to Grigor Dimitrov.

Can he build on the impressive start in Barcelona?

Ruud v Shelton Prediction and Tip

Ruud thrives on clay. He is far more experienced than Shelton on the tour and all that should combine to help him ease past the rising American star.
