Frances Tiafoe v Emil Ruusuvuori Head to Head

Ruusuvuori has won both their previous meetings. One of those wins came at a qualifying round in the Canadian Masters in 2021 and the other win came in the quarterfinal in Stockholm last year.

Tiafoe Comes in as the Houston Open Champion

Newly crowned Houston Open champion, Frances Tiafoe heads to his fourth Barcelona Open campaign with a 4-0 clay court record in 2023.

Tiafoe is 19-6 overall this year. He was a semifinalist in  Indian Wells — his best ever showing at a Masters 1000 tournament. He also helped U.S. win the inaugural United Cup by winning all five of his singles matches and was also a quarterfinalist in Dallas and Acapulco.

So overall he has looked dangerous throughout the season so far and comes to Barcelona in amazing form, having claimed his second career title by beating Tomás Martín Etcheverry in the final in Houston.

That was his last tournament and he won all four of his matches in straight sets. He will be hoping to keep the streak going in Barcelona, where he made it to the round of 16 in 2022, following two second round finishes.

Ranked no. 12th in the world, the 25-year-old is seeded no. 5 for the tournament. He had a first round bye and will aim to hit the ground running in his first match of the tournament on Tuesday.

Ruusuvuori Breezes Past Bublik

World no. 40 Emil Ruusuvuori was off to a flying start as he breezed past world no. 55 Alexander Bublik in under an hour on Monday.

Ruusuvuori allowed Bublik just 8 points (4 on the serve and 4 on return) in the first set as he bagelled the Kazakh to draw first blood. In the second set, he saved the only break point that he faced and converted the only one that he held in the set to complete the 6-0, 6-3 thrashing of Bublik.

Ruusuvuori is 14-12, including qualifying rounds and Davis Cup matches this season. The Finn’s best this year was a run to his first ever Masters 1000 quarterfinal in Miami.

The 24-year-old world no. 40 is 2-2 on clay across levels this season. Playing as a lucky loser in Monte Carlo last week, he lost to Jiri Lehecka in the opening round.

But a first round win in Barcelona would have boosted his confidence. Can he keep the momentum going in the next round?

Tiafoe v Ruusuvuori Prediction and Tip

Tiafoe is in excellent form over the last one year. He was also unstoppable at the Houston Open, a clay court tournament. He brings a 4-0 clay court season record into the tournament and will be eager to make it to the round of 16.
