Novak Djokovic v Dusan Lajovic Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two and Djokovic has won them both in straight sets. Total games lost by Djokovic across those four sets has been four.

Djokovic Struggles Past Van Assche

The elbow isn’t doing too well but for now, it’s good enough according to Djokovic. And that’s what was on show in his second round match against Luca Van Assche as he struggled past his French opponent in three sets.

Djokovic came back from behind to notch up a 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-2 victory in his second round match at Banja Luka, having earlier earned an opening bye in the tournament.

The world number one had his chances in the first set as well, getting three set-points but frittering them all away. In the second, Djokovic looked more like himself as he broke Van Assche twice to force the match into a decider.

Van Assche would have thought he had a chance of an upset when he broke Djokovic in the very first game but from there on it was just one-way traffic. Djokovic broke back, two times in a row, before a third break ended his opponent’s hopes.

Lajovic Blows Barrere Apart

It did not take Lajovic too much time in his second round encounter as he creamed Gregoire Barrere with utmost ease to set up his meeting with the world number one.

Lajovic, who had earlier overcome a spirited performance from Filip Krajinovic in the first round, sealed off a 6-3, 6-0 win over Barrere in the second to make it to his fourth quarterfinal of the season. All the previous three had come on clay too.

In a match that lasted just 65 minutes, Lajovic looked to be involved in a keen tussled when Barrere broke back in the fifth game and then levelled things out in the sixth. However, that was the last game that Barrere would win in the match as Lajovic went on to clinch nine in a row to progress.

With his opponent struggling with his elbow, this might be Lajovic’s chance to improve upon his previous performances against Djokovic. He surely would hope to win more than the four games he has won against the world number one over the four sets.

Djokovic v Lajovic Prediction and Tip

While Djokovic’s fitness is supreme and his mental toughness unquestionable, where things might actually even out is the nature of the courts – they are very slow in nature even by clay’s standards. Could see a keen tussle in at least one of the two sets.
