Anastasia Potapova v Caroline Garcia Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, with both their previous meetings on hard courts. Garcia won in Tianjin in 2019, but Potapova was victorious in Ostrava two years ago.

Potapova Dismisses Fifth Seed

Potapova had been pushed all the way in her first round match by the Croatian qualifier, Petra Martic, and it took a third set tie-breaker to decide it in her favour.

Therefore, there may have been a certain amount of trepidation on her part when she found herself next facing the fifth seed, Coco Gauff, the teenager who reached the French Open final last year.

But, having survived break points in her opening two service games, it was actually she who claimed the first break of the match.

Gauff saved four break points which would have made it worse, but it was just a temporary reprieve, as Potapova broke her for a second time.

An early break put her in control of the second set as well, and, try as she might, Gauff could not wrest back the advantage from her.

Potapova sealed the win in a fitting way by serving out to love.

Garcia Edges Out German

Garcia, twice a beaten finalist this year in Lyon and Monterrey, was given a first round bye in Stuttgart.

She, therefore, opened her campaign at the second round stage against the German Tia Maria. It proved to be a tightly fought match with a first set that seemed destined for a tie-break before sparking into life in its latter stages.

Maria, serving to stay in the set, saved four break points and, having done so, broke Garcia next game.

But, before the German could celebrate, she was broken in turn, and that meant that it did go to a tie-break after all, which the Frenchwoman went on to claim.

When Garcia was broken early in the second sets, the local crowd hoped for a Maria comeback. However, they were disappointed when Garcia not only recovered the break, but went one up as well.

Maria fought back to level once more, only to drop her serve for what proved to be the last time, as the seed served out.

Potapova v Garcia Prediction and Tip

Potapova will be buoyed by the way that she beat Gauff, but now she has to beat an even more difficult opponent in the form of Garcia, who, in the past 12 months, has become one of the world’s top players.

Garcia will believe she has an excellent chance of reaching another semi-final.

It promises to be a close match though.
