Alcaraz Fights Off Conditions, Bautista-Agut

It took Alcaraz some time but he managed to stave off a late Roberto Bautista Agut surge to clinch his place in the last eight.

Following on from his 6-3, 6-1 win over Nuno Borges in the second round, Alcaraz registered a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Bautista-Agut to march forward.

Featuring in his first tournament since making the semifinal at the Miami Open, Alcaraz needed an hour and 54 minutes and lost his serve three times before clinching his win.

It started with Bautista-Agut breaking Alcaraz in the fifth game of the opening set, but the world number two stormed back with successive breaks to take the set.

Alcaraz then went 2-0 ahead in the second but three successive breaks of serves in as many games meant the two players were levelled up at 4-4. At 5-5, however, Alcaraz managed to break to love and then served out the match without losing a point.

Alcaraz will look to tame the much-improved Fokina as he marches towards the defence of his title.

Fokina with an Easy Win Over Ruusuvuori

It didn’t take Fokina too much to register a straight-set win over Emil Ruusuvuori in the third round of the competition.

Fokina, who had defeated clay-court specialist Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the second round, spent just an hour and 26 minutes on court for his third round victory.

He won 6-4, 7-5 despite losing a bit of his momentum in the second set where he served to go 4-2 ahead. Instead he lost his serve at that point.

The good news for Fokina was he quickly composed himself, winning the next two games for the loss of just one point before breaking his opponent in the crucial 11th game. He followed it up by serving it out to 15 to make it 3-2 on clay for the season.
