Andrey Rublev v Karen Khachanov Head to Head

They are 2-2 on the tour and 3-3 overall. They met once in 2023, with Rublev winning the round of 16 clash in Monte-Carlo in straight sets. It was their first ever meeting on clay and was dominated b Rublev.

Rublev Eases Past Nishioka

Andrey Rublev knocked out Yoshihito Nishioka in the third round of the Madrid Masters on Sunday.

The fifth seed, who scored a tough 7-5, 6-4 win over Stan Wawrinka in the second round on Friday, needed an hour and 27 minutes to beat the Japanese player 6-2, 7-5.

Rublev struck 10 aces and 35 winners. He was not broken in the match as he saved the only break point that he faced against the world no. 34. In contrast, Rublev held eight chances to break Nishioka’s serve and he capitalised on three of them.

The world no. 6 improved his overall season record to 23-9. He is 10-1 on clay, having reached the final of both his previous clay court tournaments this season. While he went on to secure his first Masters 1000 title by beating Holger Rune in Monte-Carlo; he missed out on the title in Banja Luka, falling to Dusan Lajovic.

Rublev also reached a final in Dubai this year, finishing runner-up to Daniil Medvedev.

The Russian will be hoping to reach a second straight quarterfinal in Madrid. Last year he lost in the last eight stage to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Khachanov Edges Past Bautista Agut

For the second straight match, 10th seed Karen Khachanov needed three sets to advance to the next round of the Madrid Masters.

After receiving a first round bye, Khachanov had defeated Thiago Monteiro 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the second round on Friday.

On Sunday, the world no. 12 needed two hours and 55 minutes to see off the no. 20 seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the third round. After winning the first set, Khachanov saw Bautista Agut take the second set through a sole break in the final game.

The Russian then got the solitary break in the final set to seal a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 victory.

Khachanov improved his season record to 18-8. He was a semifinalist at the Australian Open and in Miami and was a quarterfinalist in both the Adelaide tournaments.

Khachanov is yet to reach a quarterfinal on clay this year, falling in the round of 16 in Monte-Carlo and Barcelona. Can he go past the round of 16 in Madrid?
