Jaume Munar came back from a set down to oust Matteo Arnaldi in the third round of the Madrid Masters on Sunday.

This is the first time that Munar has reached the fourth round of a Masters 1000 tournament. The world no. 88 had begun his Madrid campaign with a 7-6, 7-6 win over Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis.

In the second round, Munar had taken the opening set tiebreak against 30th seed Tallon Griekspoor, before the Dutchman retired from the contest.

Munar didn’t need a tiebreak in the third round contest against Arnaldi, but dropped a set for the first time in the tournament. The Italian came back from a break down to take a one-set-to-love lead. However, the Spaniard rebounded by getting the solitary break in the second set. Once he evened the contest, Munar took complete control of the match and broke ARnaldi three more times in the final set to win the contest 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Munar improved to 11-12 across levels this year. All his 11 wins have come on clay. His best run saw him reach the semifinals in Santiago.

Altmaier Takes Down Hanfmann

Daniel Altmaier got lucky at the start of the tournament and now the 24-year-old is making the most of the opportunity.

Altmaier, who had beaten Attila Balázs in the first qualifying round, lost in the second qualifying round to Jurij Rodionov. But a late pull out from the main draw, saw the German find a place as a lucky loser. What’s more, the world no. 92 even received a first round bye.

Making his debut in Madrid, Altmaier began his campaign with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over fellow German Oscar Otte. He carried that form into the third round on Sunday as he knocked out another compatriot, Yannick Hanfmann, in. straight sets.

Altmaier saved a set point in the 12th game of the first set before clinching the set in the tiebreak. He then saved three break points in the fifth game of the second set, before breaking Hanfmann in the eighth game and serving out the match in the next for a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win in 66 minutes.

Altmaier is 15-12 across levels this year, and this includes a clay court Challenger title in Sarasota. Can he reach his first tour level quarterfinal of the year on Tuesday?

Both players play their best tennis on clay but Munar is the more experienced of the two at the tour level. He also has a perfect record against the German and will look to keep it intact in the fourth round.
