Volynets Coming off Saint-Malo Semifinal

As some of the top players were battling it out at the Madrid Open last week, a few others like Volynets were slugging at the Saint-Malo Open, a WTA 125 tournament in France.

And Volynets did well too, reaching the semifinal of that event, with wins over Margaux Rouroy, Maryna Zanevska and Magdalena Frech before Greet Minnen got the better of her.

Before that, however, Volynets hadn’t had the best of starts to the clay season following the solidity she had shown in hardcourt competitions.

An Austin Open semifinalist and having reached the third round at the Australian Open, Volynets was knocked out in the qualifiers of the Stuttgart Open and then stumbled in the very first round of the Madrid Open.

Can she continue with her run from Saint-Malo?

Cirstea Wins Reus Title

Much like Volynets, Cirstea is also coming off a solid performance on the WTA 125 circuit. Featuring in the Reus Open, Cirstea dropped just one set on her way to winning the tournament in Spain and she will now hope she can push on from there.

The good news for Cirstea is she has a break between that tournament win and the start of this one in Rome.

Typically it does become difficult for the players outside the top 20 to continue on the same trajectory the week after having won a title, but Cirstea will have two to three days off as well.

Earlier in the season Cirstea had featured at Madrid in her only tournament on clay and made the second round. There she was sent packing by the eventual title winner Aryna Sabalenka.

She should start a favourite here.

Volynets v Cirstea Prediction and Tip

While Volynets has done her bit in recent times it will be Cirstea who starts off a favourite with an offer of 3/10 being a reasonable one. Could be a straight-set win too.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Cirstea to win: 3/10
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Cirstea to win in straight sets: 10/11
