Marketa Vondrousova v Kaia Kanepi Head to Head

Vondrousova has won both their previous meetings. She win in three sets at the French Open in 2021 and in straight sets in Adelaide this year.

Marketa Vondrousova has a good record in Italy. The left-handed Czech was a quarterfinalist on her debut in 2019 and a semifinalist in 2020. She however, bowed out of the Rome Open in her last appearance in 2021.

Vondrousova, who had a premature end to the season last year due to a wrist surgery, saw a constant dip in her ranking, even going out of the top 100 by the end of the season last year. But she has made considerable progress since her return to action at lower level events in November-December last year.

This year, Vondrousova is 18-7 following some big performances at the start of the year. She was a semifinalist in Linz, a quarterfinalist in Adelaide and made it to the last 16 in both Indian Wells and Miami.

In Madrid, she had to qualify for the main draw and she did that with two solid wins. Carrying the form into the main draw, she knocked out Marina Bassols Ribera in the opener but went down fighting to Magda Linette in the second round.

The 23-year-old, former world no. 14 is once again climbing up the rankings. She had fallen out of the top 100 briefly for a couple of weeks at the start of the year, but is currently sitting at no. 70. Can she put on an impressive performance in Rome and keep moving up the rankings.

Kanepi Struggling in 2023

Kaia Kanepi has been struggling to win matches this year. The 37-year-old Estonian is heading to her sixth Italian Open main draw with a 4-10 overall season record behind her.

Only two of those four wins have come in tour-level tournaments. One was against Aliasksandra Sasnovich in the opening round in Adelaide and the other was against Storm Hunter in the first round in Adelaide-2, where she was a lucky loser.

She made six consecutive first round exits following her Round of 16 loss in Adelaide-2. These contest included, the Australian Open. Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami, Charleston and Madrid.

She played in an ITF tournament last week to find some form. While she scored a comfortable win in the first round, she was beaten easily by Dalila Jakupović in the round of 16.

Can Kanepi, who was a quarterfinalist in Rome in 2009, find some form soon.

Vondrousova has a 2-0 record against the Estonian; she also a far bette record this season. Expect a one-sided contest with Vndrouosva advancing.
