Kovinic Won an ITF Clay Court Tournament in April

It has been a good year so far for Danka Kovinic. The Montenegrin is heading to her third Italian Open tournament with a 7-2 record on clay, across levels.

Kovinic won her 14th ITF title by defeating Rebeka Masarova in the final of the ITF Oeiras Open in Portugal. All 14 of Kovinic’s titles have come on clay.

In her only tour level event on clay, Kovinic won her first round match in Madrid but was beaten in the second round by Barbora Krejcikova.

Overall Kovinic is 12-9 from all her matches this season. She had a very bright start to 2023, reaching the semifinals in Auckland and the quarterfinals in Lyon.

In her previous two appearances in Rome, Kovinic lost in the first round in 2016, but went on to reach the round of 16 as a qualifier in 2020. How far can she go this year?

Bronzetti Struggling at the Tour Level

Facing Kovinic will be Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti, who too has reached an ITF final this year, but has struggled to win matches at the tour level. While she brings an 8-13 overall record to Rome, on the tour she has won just 3 of her 13 matches. All three of those wins came at the United Cup where Italy finished runner-up to team USA.

Bronzetti has struggled ever since the inaugural mixed gender tournament, making first round exits in Hobart, Australian Open, Linz, Merida, Monterrey, Indian Wells, Miami and Madrid. So she is 0-8 from her last eight tour level tournaments.

The world no. 98, however, reached an indoor ITF final at Croissy-Beaubourg, finishing runner-up to Jodie Anna Burrage .

On clay, Bronzetti has featured in three tournaments across levels. While she lost her openers in ITF Belinzona and the Madrid Open, she finally won her first match of the season on clay against Iryna Shymanovich in the first round of the WTA 125 in Saint Malo last week. She lost in the second round though to Leolia Jeanjean.

This is the second time she will be playing in the main draw of the tournament, can she get her first win in Rome on Tuesday?
