Gracheva Struggling on Clay

Varvara Gracheva is on course to deliver the best season of her career, but that plan may be derailed slightly if her problems on clay courts continue. It may seem a bit odd, considering that all of her nine ITF finals have come on this surface.

The 22-year-old, who is at a solid 22-13, has won just one clay event – a straight-set win over Anna-Lena Friedsam in the Charleston Open. She ended up losing next to Magda Linette.

The Russian last played in the Madrid Open, where she was stunned by Xiyu Wang in the opener.

Of course, it is not too late for Gracheva to turn this around, especially considering her form. She is now ranked #46 – having peaked at the 43rd spot last month.

Among her highlights are a fourth-round showing in Miami and Indian Wells as a qualifier, where she beat Ons Jabeur, Petra Martic, and Daria Kasatkina en route. Varvara was also a runner-up in the ATX Open Austin.

Osorio Seeking Redemption

World No. 100 Camila Osorio has fallen on tough times, but the 21-year-old has got all the time in the world to stage a comeback.

Her record is now 10-6, courtesy of her qualifying wins against Deborah Chiesa and Oceane Dodin in straight sets. This will be her second time in the Italian Open; last season, she made it round two.

For what it is worth, Osorio has some experience on clay. She won the 2021 Copa Colsanitas alongside winning three ITF titles on the surface.

Camila is also a former #33 who is set to start in Rome on the back of a quarterfinal showing in the Reus Challenger and a round-three stint in the Madrid Open in recent weeks. Her other prominent result of the season is the semifinal feat in Lyon Open.

Gracheva v Osorio Prediction and Tip

Gracheva is the heavy favourite but considering her clay form, she may be tested by Osorio. We may be looking at a few too many games here, with a good chance for Camila to win this one.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Gracheva to win: 3/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Osorio to win: 7/4
