Kasatkina In Decent Form on Clay

A semifinalist last year, world no. 9 Daria Kasatkina comes into this year’s Italian Open in decent form. The Russian has featured in three clay court tournaments in 2023 and has a 5-3 record in them.

Kastakina first made it to the final four in Charleston, where she was beaten by Ons Jabeur. She next suffered a shock first round defeat in Stuttgart, but got off to a good start in Madrid only to suffer a tough three-set defeat to Veronica Kudermetova in the round of 16.

While she has failed to go as deep as she would have liked, she will take heart from the fact that she is winning more often on clay than on hard courts this year. She had begun the season well by reaching her 12th final in Adelaide, but was denied a seventh title by Belinda Bencic. Since then she struggled to win consecutive matches until Charleston.

Overall she has a 10-11 season record this year. She will be hoping to get off to a good start in Rome as she aims to match her last year’s exploits in the tournament. Kasatkina had made it to the semifinal last year but was stopped from progressing further by Jabeur. Making her eighth appearance in Rome this year, how far can she go?

Pigato Edges Out Fellow Cherubini

Two years after playing her maiden WTA main draw match against Serena Williams in Parma, Lisa Pigato player her second main draw match on Tuesday and the 19-year-old Italian notched her first win on the tour by beating compatriot Diletta Cherubini in three sets.

Ranked no. 483rd in the world, Pigato converted 5 of 9 break points and saved 6 of 11 to beat the fellow wild card 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.

After edging out Cherubini  in a closely contested first set, Pigota was outplayed in the second set and found herself a break down after the opening game of the final set. But she found her way back in the set and broke her opponent twice in the final set to clinch the contest in two hours and 25 minutes.

Pigato is at her best on clay courts and has three ITF titles on the surface. Can she cause a massive upset on Thursday?
