Bogdan Starts Strong

Ana Bogdan started her Italian Open campaign on a solid note, beating Nao Hibino 7-5, 6-0. Impressively, she won 82% of the points behind the first serve.

The 30-year-old Romanian has a decent clay-court pedigree, including the runner-up feat from the Poland Open last season and the title run in Iasi Challenger. Ana is also a former World No. 48 (currently ranked #60) who has handed defeats to the likes of Maria Sakkari, Paula Badosa, and Barbora Krejcikova over her career.

That said, her present year has been bleak. She is 8-9 and has played in just two WTA tournaments in the last two months – Miami Open and Madrid Open.

In the latter, she fell to Shelby Rogers in round two, while in the former, she lost in the opener.

Bogdan’s best run came in Dubai, where, as a qualifier, she made it to the round of 16 after moving past Laura Siegemund and Rogers.

Garcia, Looking Confident

World No. 4 Caroline Garcia looks well on track to continue her breathtaking season from last year. She is already 21-10, but her roll may be slow for the next few weeks.

In Rome, the best she has done is reaching the quarterfinal – just once in 2018. Since then, she has never made it past round two. This may be in part due to her lack of rhythm on clay courts. While she has done well as a doubles player on the surface, she has not quite managed to emulate those results in the singles department.

To make that point further, she was beaten by Mayar Sherif in round three in Madrid, while in Stuttgart, she fell to Anastasia Potapova in the quarterfinal.

The best Garcia has done in 2023 is reaching the final in Lyon and Monterrey – losing, respectively, to Alycia Parks and Donna Vekic.

Needless to say, Caro has seen her fair share of resistance in 2023 – often at the hands of unusual suspects. She will need to be careful when playing Bogdan.

Garcia v Bogdan Prediction and Tip

Garcia is the heavy favourite, but Bogdan can surprise. Punters may want to consider backing the Romanian as an underdog but for now, expect Caroline to win this in straight sets.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Garcia to win 2-0: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
